Ringlet and the Day the Oceans Stopped

Author(s): Felicity Williams

NZ Middle Fiction 8-12-year-olds | Fantasy, Magic and Science Fiction | Staff Picks - Kathleen

An eleven-year-old mergirl has better things to do than save the oceans from deadly stagnation. Except there's no one else. And worse still, something monstrous is hellbent on stopping her. It's Ringlet against time and tides and there's not much left of either.

Kathleen's review - What a mad trip through the ocean! Ringlet is a mermaid who has lots of bright ideas but they frequently go wrong. Her last misdemeanour has her being ostracised, so she decides to leave home for a while. Then she manages to get herself involved in a dangerous task, and cluelessly bumbles her way through all sorts of trouble.

I love the world that this author has imagined - from the crazy fish and crabs, etc., etc., to the way they propel themselves through the water, to the mythology that shapes their lives . . . it's really well done.

Fantastic and fun!
